When homeowners in Northern New Jersey start planning a kitchen renovation, the first question is almost always about cabinets. And for good reason — cabinetry accounts for roughly 40% of a kitchen's visual impact and a similar share of its budget. Getting it right means understanding not just what looks good, but what works, what lasts, and what adds real value to your home.

Why custom cabinetry outperforms stock and semi-custom

Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes, limited finishes, and standard box depths. Semi-custom allows some modification. But a fully custom kitchen cabinet, built to your exact dimensions, means no filler strips, no compromise on drawer depth, no settling for the finish that was "closest." Every inch of your kitchen works.

At épure millwork, we build every cabinet box from 3/4" Baltic birch plywood — not particleboard — with dovetail-jointed solid wood drawer boxes and Blum soft-close hardware on every drawer and door. These aren't upgrades. They're how we build everything.

Planning your shaker

The planning process starts with a site measurement — we measure every wall, ceiling height, window, and obstruction. We then produce detailed shop drawings for your approval before a single board is cut. Changes are easy on paper. They're expensive in the shop.

Key decisions to make early:

Door style. Flat slab, shaker, inset, or profile? Each reads differently and suits different architectural contexts. Shaker is versatile and forgiving. Flat slab is contemporary and shows grain beautifully. Inset is traditional and precise — it requires tighter tolerances and costs more, but the result is incomparably refined.

Wood species or painted finish. Walnut, white oak, maple, and cherry each have distinct characters. Painted finishes offer the widest color range but require a stable substrate (we use MDF for painted doors to minimize grain telegraphing and seasonal movement).

Hardware. This is where budget decisions often get made last but matter most for daily use. We specify Blum for functional hardware and source pulls and knobs from a range of European and domestic suppliers depending on the aesthetic.

What to expect from the process

A typical custom kitchen engagement runs 10–14 weeks from signed drawings to installation complete. That includes 2–3 weeks for design and approvals, 6–8 weeks of fabrication in our Little Falls shop, and 1–2 weeks for installation. We do all installation with our own crew — we don't subcontract.

Serving New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut

We work regularly throughout Bergen, Passaic, Essex, and Morris counties in New Jersey, across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, and into Westchester and Fairfield counties. If you're within roughly 60 miles of Little Falls, NJ, we can handle your project.

Questions we get asked most

How long will my custom kitchen last? Custom cabinetry built with quality substrates and hardware routinely lasts 30+ years. The kitchen in your parents' house that still looks great? That's likely custom or semi-custom work. The kitchen that was falling apart in 8 years? Stock.

Do I need to hire an architect or designer? Not necessarily. We handle full design in-house — measured drawings, material selections, hardware specifications, and shop drawings. For larger projects that involve structural changes or permit work, we'll tell you if you need an architect involved.

Can I mix custom cabinets with appliances I already have? Yes. We design around your existing appliances all the time. Give us the model numbers before the site visit and we'll have the dimensions in hand before we measure.

What if I change my mind mid-project? Changes after shop drawings are approved incur additional design time. Changes after fabrication has started incur material costs. We spend significant time on the front end precisely to minimize the chances of late changes.
